Project
DFW wanted a first of its kind airport experience in their newly expanded Terminal D lounge. The pilot started in the heart of the pandemic, producing obstacles as well as prompting innovative solutions. This wasn’t just an aesthetic approach, it was a purposeful task to improve flow through the terminal. It reduced stress, optimized visibility to information, and engaged passengers safely during a pandemic.
Challenges
There were multiple challenges, 1) Designing a complex system of dynamic content that coincided with boarding states and times of day on multiple screen resolutions. 2) Designing for visibility and compliance across the Terminal D Lounge. 3) Creating a touchless interactive gaming experience.
Discovery and Defining
The function of the entire ecosystem was dependent on each individual terminal gate inside of the Terminal D lounge. Each gate had its own digital display known as the GID, Gate Information Display. The information on the GIDs determined the function of the rest of the displays: Mediawall, Overhead Walkway, and Clear Video Wall
There were two media walls that acted accordingly based on their separate locations; the South Media Wall near gates D1-D2 and the North Media Wall near D3-D4. If only D1 entered a Boarding state, then only the South Media Wall would show a Boarding state theme. The North Media Wall would only coincide with the gates on the north end. However, the Media Wall still displayed flight information from across the Terminal D Lounge.
Touchless Gaming
We designed a touchless gaming device where the player simply hovers their hand to engage in gameplay. Several games were created for the purpose of passive entertainment as passengers waited for their flight. I created the game concept, and UX/UI for the game Glider.
Client Platform
We created a client platform that was specifically designed to operate the interconnected flight information displays. The product design was kept simple to establish an easy user experience for a complex system.
Results
The Terminal D DFW: Gates of Tomorrow project started out as a pilot to showcase our team's technical innovation. The successful launch of this project lead to a 10 year contract with DFW, expanding our work into the rest of their terminals. The Gates of Tomorrow project also received high recognition at the 2022 Digital Signage Awards and earned a Grand Prix Award (Best of Show) and First Place in Technical Achievement.
