Project
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) required a more thoughtful communication system versus their standard signs.
They wanted to limit TSA officer interactions with the public while still preparing their passengers for screening.
The program would be a pillar to their “Innovation Checkpoints” initiative introducing new technologies to their customers. After our first successful pilot with TSA in 2018, we pitched a new design approach in 2020 to better fulfill TSA’s objective. Our 2018 insights improved our understanding of passenger needs.
Challenges
One of the challenges was considering how to optimize messaging flow that catered to the passenger journey. The other challenge was designing for a slim, vertical format, while still upholding ADA compliance.
Solution
We designed an intuitive interface that helped users receive information quickly as well as anticipate upcoming messages. We defined a design anatomy and categorized types of messages. Furthermore we designed the system to be scalable with interchanging messages that could be updated or added to.
Content Transitions
After defining the design system, I led a team of motion designers to develop content transitions. Transitions have both an aesthetic and functional purpose. It prevents screen burn-in as well as provides informative entertainment that draws attention to specific messages.
Results
Synect continued their partnership with TSA and received the greenlight to implement our design systems in airports across the U.S. Units have been deployed to Orlando International Airport, Reagan National Airport, LaGaurdia Airport, and in the process of being adopted by more airports. The TSA Faster, Better Security Checkpoint project also received high recognition at the 2022 Digital Signage Awards and earned a Grand Prix Award (Best of Show) and First Place in Management and Other Software.
